I have loved you
like the rain cast from heaven--
soothing caress to the blooms,
a breath of smile on the parched earth,
easing the blazing heat beneath your feet.
Only you mistook me for water
that grazed your skin and you were gone
before it reached your heart.
I rolled back into the road;
out there the sun is waiting.
Gladly I let it piece away
every whit of my waning strength.
Happily you bade goodbye
to my very last sigh.
