Drive-In Movie Theater

"Why don't we go to Murray's theater?" I suggested.

It was date night, and we wanted to go out and do something, but we weren't sure what. We were both scrolling through our phones, looking for a place to go. Up until now, it had looked like we would be going to Tim Horton's like we always did. We went there so often that all the employees knew us by name.

"Isn't that the really old drive-in theater that only shows black and white movies?" Shawn asked.

"I don't think it's just black and white movies." I scrolled through the list of movies on their website, all of which were black and white. "Okay, maybe they are all black and white, but it could still be fun. Have you ever seen a black and white movie?"

"Once, I think. I remember that they didn't talk though. It was just music and laughing. Kind of like Tom and Jerry."

"Yeah, but I still think it'll be fun. It's something different."

"All right. We'll go. Do you know what movie is playing tonight?"

"No. There aren't dates on the website, but even if I did know, would it make a difference? Would you recognize the movie?"

"Probably not," he admitted with a chuckle. "Come on. Let's go."

He got up off the couch and held out a hand to pull me up. We were already completely ready to go because we were going to head out the door when I suggested we do something different.

We went outside and got in his Jeep and drove halfway across town to the theater. When we arrived, we paid and they gave us a paper that told us what movie was playing, what time it would come on, and what radio station to turn to for the sound. There were also a few ads and the names of all the companies that sponsored the theater. Shawn pulled into a parking space, changed the radio station, and cut the engine.

"Do you want anything from the concession stand?" Shawn asked. We still had about five minutes before the movie started.

"No. I'm not hungry. You can go get something for yourself though."

He shook his head. "I don't want anything either."

We lapsed into silence, and I absentmindedly started thrumming my fingers on the center console. Shawn's gaze traveled down to my hand. His hand gently pressed over mine, preventing movement. He picked up my hand and ran a thumb over my knuckles. He threaded his fingers through mine, and guided my hand to his mouth to press a kiss against the back of my palm. The small gesture made butterflies erupt in my belly. He slowly lifted his head to meet my gaze, a small smile playing on his lips. I gently freed my hand to place it against the side of his face. His hand covered mine, holding it in place. His eyes fluttered shut, and I ran a thumb over his cheekbone a few times.

"I love you," he whispered, opening his eyes.

"I love you more," I whispered back.

"Not possible," he disagreed.

Suddenly, the loud music of the beginning of the movie blared through the speakers, startling us both. I dropped my hand, and Shawn turned down the volume. We looked at each other and laughed. Shawn took my hand again, but this time, it stayed on the center console.

After about ten minutes of the movie, I could tell Shawn wasn't into it. He was way too sweet to say anything, but he didn't want to be watching this. I decided to put my Plan B into action. Well, really it was kind of part of Plan A because I would have done it even if he loved the movie.

"Shawn," I started, slowly.

"Hmm?" he turned to look at me.
